The Air Huarache has been a huge success since its inception, fast becoming one of the leading silhouettes in the brand’s arsenal of classic sneaks. On the back of the success of the Air Max, Tinker Hatfield once again pushed the boundaries with this ground breaking design.
The bold creation came at a time when stand out sneaks were in high demand. This design didn’t disappoint with the addition of a never before seen, thick rubber heel strap and lycra-lined neoprene collar. Chunky midsoles which feature AIR bumper plates and a combination of tumbles leather and soft mesh gives the pair a quality aesthetic. Described in the promotional material as ‘A radical departure from conventional shoe design’ this futurist design was intended to shock and impress. We think it did both!
After the success of the Air Max and many of the Michael Jordan’s which were gaining notoriety as some of the best sneaks in the game, Tinker make another earth shattering drop. The pair was originally called the Harrachi Runner with the inspiration taken from the water-skiing experience. The snug rubber booties joined the collection of other Nike stretchy-sock sneakers including the Sock Racer and sleek Mowabb.
As with the Air Max silhouette, the first concept of the Huaraches was not met well with the execs of Nike. It was deemed to be to bold for a commercial audience. Luckily, the Nike director at the time, Tom Archie ignored the haters and commissioned 5,000 pairs. This original order was sold exclusively at the New York Marathon. It was a huge success, selling out in a few days amongst the running fraternity. It was then sent for full production with over 250,000 pairs sold in 1991.
Over the years, some spin-offs of the original design were launched including the Velcro-strapped Air Trainer Huarache and Air Flight Huarache basketball sneak. In 1994 we saw the Air Huarache Racer and 10 years later, the Light Burst dropped.
It may no longer be the new kid on the block, but the Haurache still remains as unique as ever. With new and exciting releases continuing to drop, sneakerheads will always have a limitless supply of fresh packs to add to their collection.
