Two new Air Max 95’s to Celebrate 20 Years of ’95

unnamed

As we covered in our previous Air Max 95 article, young designer Sergio Lozano was in charge of reinvigorating the Nike Running line in the mid 90’s. He overcame the odds and created the Air Max 95, a running shoe that was unlike any other seen before which changed the game for Nike and the Air Max family.

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the launch of the Air Max 95, Nike will be releasing two new models: The Air Max 95 Ultra Jacquard and the Women’s Air Max 95 Ultra. Each of the shoes have been created by designers who have strong connections with the original shoe and include the same pioneering construction methods as Lozano’s brainchild.

Designer Ben Yun was in charge of this iteration of the Air Max 95 and created it to represented freedom of thought and expression. “I learned how to create shoes from a pattern engineer, a very old-school type of shoemaking. The way Sergio broke all the traditional rules amazed and inspired me,” Yun recalls.

This was a project where he wanted to do things differently, “Most of my other Air Max 95 models involved applying new innovations and keeping with the iconic design of the original, like the Air Max 95 Engineered Mesh. The Air max 95 Ultra
Jacquard is the one that really pushes the envelope.”

The upper is built using a Jacquard weaving process while Nike Flywire is applied to represent the anatomy of the human body, “Human fascia is soft tissue. The second-gen Nike Fywire is dynamic and moves with the foot as it secures it inside the shoe. You could say they are the perfect match.”

Dylan Raasch was the designer behind Nike Roshe One, Air Max Thea, and Air Max Ultra so knows a thing-or-two about minimalist design. For this Air Max 95, made exclusively for women,  Raasch’s aim was to build a lower profile which meant removing the forefoot visible air. “It was important that we made it look close to the original, even though we had to remove the forefoot Air-Sole unit,” Raasch explains. A less is more philosophy also applies to the upper, “Using no-sew films we were able to get the six upper panels down to one layer without sacrificing the iconic gradation.”

The shoe’s color scheme has also been adapted to differ from the original. This time, the gradation is reversed, starting with black at the top of the shoe and getting lighter towards the sole.

The Women’s Air Max 95 looks similar to the original, but is a whole lot different with updated innovations designed so you can feel the difference.

The Nike Sportswear Air Max 95 Ultra Jacquard and Women’s Air Max 95 Ultra is scheduled to launch on 16th July from nike.com/sportswear and selected Nike retailers. We’ll keep you updated on pricing when the information becomes available.
