Adidas have helped raise awareness for ocean pollution throughout the world by creating a shoe made completely out of recycled plastic ocean waste.
The project was in collaboration with Parley for the Oceans, an organisation formed in 2013, who aim to protect the world’s oceans.
This nameless concept shoe probably won’t hit the shelves, however something very similar is planned for release. This concept was primarily focussed on drawing attention to the pollution problem, although a consumer-ready line of products made from ocean plastics will be releasing later this year.
Take a look through the images of concept shoe and some of these facts from UNESCO about ocean pollution that inspired the project:
- The United Nations Environment Programme estimated in 2006 that every square mile of ocean contains 46,000 pieces of floating plastic.
- Plastic debris causes the deaths of more than a million seabirds every year, as well as more than 100,000 marine mammals.
- Land-based sources (such as agricultural run-off, discharge of nutrients and pesticides and untreated sewage including plastics) account for approximately 80% of marine pollution, globally.
